 'Is Gender Fluid'

Hines provides a basic and concise theoretical framework for gender in this book. For example, gender is not determined by biology, but rather the biological aspects of gender, together with gender identity and gender expression, make up the understanding and practice of gender.

She said that not only are understandings and practices of gender variable from a historical or cross-cultural perspective, but they can also be very different in the same country at the same time. Tracing the understandings and perceptions of gender across time and societies, we find that gender is never an isolated issue, but is closely intertwined with social categories such as class and race, and is embedded in different historical, social and cultural frameworks.

My previous understanding of gender fluidity was rather limited. The main problem was the strict separation between biological and social gender. The focus was on gender itself without taking into account the human and social context. Gender should not be understood at a micro level, but at a macro level. It is important to compare the cultural contexts of different countries horizontally and to consider the changes in perception at different stages of history vertically. This book provided me with a more open mind to understand the issue of gender equality and gender diversity.
