Gender Fluidity & Non-Human

It comes from my previous research, where I analyzed human and non-human populations in comparison to find sources of inspiration. So this time I used the same approach, looking for traces of gender fluidity in non-humans.

Cloenfish

Clownfish are hermaphroditic. After hatching, clownfish are asexual, neither male nor female. Simply put, they change from a sexless state to male and then to female. This is an irreversible process, from genderless to male and not back to genderless, and from male to female and back to male. They may even remain genderless for their entire lives, depending on the environment.

The condition for becoming a female is that there is no female clownfish in the survival environment. The condition for becoming a male is that there is already a mature female clownfish in the environment and that she is dominant, and that there is a lack of male clownfish in the environment.

Placopecten magellanicus

Rattans are hermaphrodite, and they can fertilize each other [4]. Because adults are unable to exercise and mate, the two sides must be close together. When mating, their penis stick out, touch around, and look for other vines. Compared with their own lengths, the penis of vine pots is the longest in the animal kingdom.

Although shellfish are distinguished as dioecious and hermaphroditic, this distinction is not constant; dioecious species can undergo sexual reversal and swap sexes, and hermaphroditic species can become dioecious as a result of sexual change.

When sea hares mate, they usually have a number of individuals lined up side by side, with the first individual playing the sexual role of the female, the last individual playing the sexual role of the male, and the middle series of individuals playing the sexual roles of both males and females.
